Tommy Donahue is a celebrity surfer, father, and lifelong Californian who loses his wife to a tragic accident. With the ocean now serving as a reminder of his grief, Tommy looks for an escape. As fate would have it, his childhood friend Andy reaches out with an opportunity to run a brewery in Wisconsin. Tommy takes Andy up on his offer, trading boards for beer. He relocates his quirky family to Wisconsin, forcing a tidal wave of transition for everyone. Joining Tommy on his new journey are his mother Louise, a dimwitted divorcee who has a heart of gold but causes trouble inadvertently, his 16-year-old daughter Sydney, a materialistic social media influencer who’s caught up in her appearance and social status, and his 12-year-old son Luke, an intelligent and shy young man who loves playing piano. Hilarity ensues when these fish out of water are forced to adjust from their ritzy ocean life to a more modest life in the Midwest, and they quickly learn how vastly different California and Wisconsin are from each other.
