Why was Brewed Awakening Created?
It’s no secret that some of the best comedy comes from ordinary people trying to navigate extraordinary changes in their lives. That idea became the foundation for Brewed Awakening. At its center is Tommy Donahue, a widowed professional surfer who leaves behind the only life he's ever known in California and moves his family to Wisconsin for a fresh start. On the surface, it's a classic fish-out-of-water story: a California family trading palm trees, beaches, and surfboards for snow, small-town life, and a Wisconsin craft brewery.
But underneath the comedy is something much more personal and universal—the idea that life doesn't always follow the plan we had for it. Sometimes we lose people. Sometimes circumstances change. Sometimes the place we thought we'd always call home no longer feels like home. And sometimes we're given an opportunity to begin again. That's the story we wanted to tell.
Why Wisconsin?
Wisconsin isn't simply the backdrop for Brewed Awakening. It's part of the show's identity. Television has given us countless stories set in Los Angeles, New York, and other major cities, but there's something special about the communities of the Midwest that deserve to be represented authentically. Wisconsin gives the series its breweries, its lakefront communities, its traditions, its personalities, its rivalries, and, perhaps most importantly, its people.
Setting the show in Sheboygan also creates the perfect contrast for Tommy and his family. They've left the Pacific Ocean behind, but they're still living in a town that’s beside the water and has an active surf community, coincidentally. They've traded one coast and one culture for another. And as they discover, Wisconsin isn't merely the place they moved to. It gradually becomes home.
Why a Family Sitcom?
The great family sitcoms can make you laugh for twenty minutes and then, when you least expect it, deliver a moment that stays with you long after the episode ends. That's the kind of television we want Brewed Awakening to be. The comedy comes from generations colliding, family members driving each other crazy, cultural differences, workplace disasters.
But underneath all of it is love. The Donahue’s aren't a perfect family. They're grieving. They argue. They embarrass each other. They make mistakes. But when something truly matters, they show up for one another. That's the kind of family we wanted at the center of this show.

Those four words have come to represent exactly what we want Brewed Awakening to be. Hollywood humor represents our ambition. We're an independently produced series from Wisconsin, but we've never wanted the show to feel small. The goal has always been to create the kind of polished, character-driven comedy that can stand alongside the television shows audiences already know and love. Midwest heart represents who we are. It's the warmth, loyalty, community, and willingness to show up for your neighbor that runs through the DNA of the series. Put the two together and you have Brewed Awakening.
